Banksia Pods are the fruit of an Australian tree.
They are easy to turn, and have the most marvelous texture!
Learn how to how to turn beautiful pieces from this unique and exotic material!

Banksia Bud Vase

Have you been intrigued by Banksia Pods? Maybe you bought one, and aren’t sure how to start turning it? I’ll show you how to get your first pod on the lathe and make something!

I start with introducing Banksia Pods and their unique character. Working with them is a lot like turning a branch. First we’ll make a bud vase, a forgiving project that can be made with almost any pod that you get.

For the next project, I’ll challenge myself with a thin-walled, one-piece, natural edged goblet.
I'll talk about design and proportion, and how to turn a pleasing ogee form.

Transform this heavy, rough, Banksia Pod into an elegant and delicate piece!

Make these projects from a branch or other wood if you don’t have a Banksia Pod.

You’ll see pieces that I’ve turned from Banksia, from easy and fast for great gift and craft show items, to challenging delicate thin-walled pieces.

Banksia Goblet

To finish up, you’ll learn my process for coloring the pod piece for an other-worldly look! And we’ll explore ideas for filling the holes.

You will learn:

- Working characteristics of Banksia Pods.
- Safety considerations.
- Choosing the right Pod for your project.
- Design and Proportion for a Goblet Form.
- Ideas for filling the holes.
- Bleach and color, or clear finish.
